The Novrup generation

Hans Peder Hansens ( b. 01.05.1829)  Children:

Edeline Hansen and Bodil Kirstine Hansen both died before they were 2 years of age.

Hans Peder Hansen Novrup, born 05.03.1861 (the writer).  Now that I have reached the age where my occupation has come to an end, it seems to be allowed to write a bit about myself.  When I was 5 years old, I had an accident.  I stumbled and broke my ankle.  Unfortunately, the leg did not heal properly, and my ankle got stiff.  Because of that, my leg would not grow as the other leg.  My father took me to Kolsnap in North Slesvig, where there was a farmer Poulsen, who had a permit to work as a leg specialist.  (He was the father of a very well known doctor in Vamdrup).  My leg began to grow, but I had to go through very painful treatments.  Every day for the entire summer, my bad leg was whipped with nettles   I have used the same cure later to strengthen my leg.

When I reached confirmation age, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher.  I received some lessons and practice with the teacher H. H. Sørensen in Veldbæk.  In September, 1876, I passed my examination with the pastor at Assens in Jerne.

My papers said that I could work as a teacher for the youngest students, at that time I was only 15½ years old.  On 31. January 1877 I got a job as winter teacher in Vrenderup, Fåborg County.  (In the old days in Denmark, the children only went to school in the winter).  There were 39 children in one class, in all ages from 6 to 14½ years.  They were nice children and my work was successful even though the teacher was only 1½ years older than the oldest student.

The next two winters I stayed in Vrenderup.  I got board and lodging with Hans Mortensen in Helle; he treated me like his son.  I paid him 80 kr, from my wages of 200 kr.  There were 3 Danish miles (23 km) from Vrenderup to Novrup, and those I had to walk every time I would visit my family.

When I finished school at 4 on Saturday afternoon and began my walk home, I’d first be with my family at bedtime.  So, it often was only Christmas, Shrovetide, and Easter when I visited them.

At that time, the job of winter teacher for the oldest children in Hyllerslev was a better paid one.  I got that job on 20 October 1879, but I was only there for one winter because I wanted to go to college.  During the summers of 1878 and 1879 I was a student at the new school for teachers in Hoven.  On 1 September 1880 I went to Gedved College and went directly in to the second grade there.  In 1882 I passed my examinations with very good grades.

When I started college, there were 200 students, and there was another student named Hans Peder Hansen.  The principal P Boysen asked me to take a surname, and I chose the name of my home town Novrup.  When the name law came in Denmark, I got to keep the name.

On 1 November 1882, I got employment as the winter teacher at Esbjerg school.  At that time it had 4 classes with 2 teachers.

On 28. November of the same year, I was called to Nordby School on Fanø, where I stayed until 20. July 1886.  Then I went to Lyngså near Sæby in north Jutland.

At that time, the first cooperative dairies were begun.  I started work to build one in Lyngså, which was a big village at that time.  There were 30 farms and small farms, and the dairy succeeded in the summer of 1888.  I was the manager’s first assistant.  There was one Danish mile to the nearest church in Albæk and we began the work to build a church in Lyngså, where I was manager.  The church was finished in 1902.

My wish was to return home, and on the 11. August 1892 I got a job as first teacher and church cantor in Alslev near Varde.  Here I worked for 35 years, until I retired on 31. October 1927.  In the summer of 1927, we built our house in Alslev.

On 5. October 1886 I married Oliane Madsen, a daughter of Mads Bojsen and Jessine Kirstine Carstensen from S. Hebo in Janderup Sogn. She gave birth to 4 children: Viggo, Hans, Kristian and Astrid – the first 3 of them were born in Lyngså school, and the last one in Alslev School.

My wife died from typhoid fever the 17. July 1894, and Kristian died from croup 24. December 1896.

My mother, who had sold the farm, then helped me with the house tasks, until 10. October 1899 when I married Andrea Bondesen, daughter of the farmer Hans Bondesen and Kirsten Christensen, from Toftnæs.

She gave birth to Anna, Johannes, Leo and Karsten. Karsten was born with an organic heart disease, and never got well. He died 22. July 1923, 12½ years old.

Beside my school work I have interests in a lot of things. In my young days, my political interest  was in the work from Venstre, and I was in the executive committee for some years in Sæby, near Lyngså. As a beekeeper, I have been a member of the board for Ribe amts Beekeeper society for 25 years.
